    Second Salem Boys’ School

Built in 1896 to replace the eighteenth-century school that still stands, this Rundbogenstil building seems a bit anomalous in Old Salem, though the architect adorned the entrances with a kind of Rundbogenstil outline of a Moravian arch.

100 North Main Street in sunset light

100 North Main Street, or Wells Fargo Center, is the tallest building in Winston-Salem. It was designed by César Pelli, most famous for the supertall Petronas Towers in Kuala Lumpur. Supposedly the dome was meant to be an interpretation of the Moravian arch, but old Pa Pitt struggles to see anything Moravian about it.

St. Philips Moravian Church, Old Salem

Built in 1861 for the Moravians of African ancestry (who were required by state law to worship separately, which was not a Moravian practice otherwise), this church is historic for any number of reasons. Wikipedia says that it is, surprisingly, the oldest Black church still standing in North Carolina. It was the place where General Orders 32, announcing the freedom of the former slaves, was read to the congregation in 1865.

The front section was added, with tasteful matching of style and materials, in 1890.
